Course Outline:

The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) were introduced into the Mental Capacity Act 2005 to ensure that individuals who lack capacity to consent to their care or treatment in hospitals or care homes are not unlawfully deprived of their liberty. At the heart of this legal framework is the role of the Best Interests Assessor (BIA), a qualified professional responsible for carrying out complex, time-sensitive assessments of a person’s situation, rights, and best interests.

This 1 day introductory course is designed for health and social care professionals who are interested in understanding the legal foundation and practical responsibilities of the BIA role—and what it takes to qualify.

Participants will explore the purpose and scope of DoLS, the multi-professional nature of the BIA role, and the statutory assessments involved in the authorisation process. The session will also clarify the legal pathway to qualification and ongoing training requirements for BIAs.

Whether you’re exploring your own readiness for BIA training or seeking a clearer understanding of how the process works, this course provides the essential grounding needed.

  • Summarise the law surrounding the DoLS process
  • Describe, in broad terms, the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Process
