Navigating Continuing Care v CAMHS – Right Path, Right Time

Course Outline:

Across many local areas, children and young people with complex needs—including those with a mental health component—are being increasingly diverted down the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) pathway, even where their wider health and care needs may point more appropriately to Continuing Care. This trend, often influenced by funding structures, diagnostic uncertainty, and service pressures, risks leaving some of the most vulnerable children without the comprehensive care they need.

This one-day, practical training course is designed to equip local authority professionals with the legal, procedural, and advocacy skills required to challenge inappropriate diversion and ensure that children receive the right care at the right time, through the right pathway.

With a mix of case studies, mock applications, and real-world scenarios, this course empowers local authority professionals to navigate complex referrals, support families effectively, and advocate for appropriate and lawful care planning.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Clarify the distinct purposes and thresholds of CAMHS and Continuing Care
  • Explore the legal duties under the Children Act 1989, the NHS Act 2006, and relevant case law
  • Build confidence in applying the National Framework for Children and Young People’s Continuing Care and using the Decision Support Tool (DST)
  • Examine how misdirection can lead to harm, funding gaps, or missed planning opportunities
  • Provide tools for evidence gathering, pathway decision-making, and multi-agency advocacy
  • Create a safe space for participants to reflect on local practice challenges, learn from peer experience, and plan for practical next steps
