Legislation and Safeguarding training for Key Workers

Course Outline:

The course is designed for newly appointed key workers with roles and responsibility for providing personalised support and guidance to assist children and young people, with autism or learning disabilities, to access resources & provision of services to meet their complex needs within an inpatient or community setting.

The course will enhance skills and knowledge to ensure that all children and young people are adequately safeguarded and appropriately supported by their key worker, working in partnership with the child, the parent/carer and all other professionals and agencies,  with the aim to either avoid the escalation of risk around the child that leads to an impatient admission or to support & assist the child with a timely discharge from an inpatient setting and a smooth transition back to the family and the community.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the legal framework that underpin services for children and young people with learning disability and autism.
  • Identify individual & organisational responsibility for safeguarding children and young people, with autism or learning difficulties, cared for in the community or in an inpatient setting;
  • Demonstrate enhanced legal literacy around the relevant statutory frameworks to support and enhance safeguarding strategy for children and young people plus an awareness of human rights
  • Examine the importance of effective multi agency working between all agencies including local authorities, ICBs, DHSC, Ofsted, the voluntary sector & all other providers ensuring that the child’s and family’s voice is central to all decision making, care plans & reviews
  • Determine the consequences of poor practice in safeguarding children where the approach is inadequate or inappropriate, or where professionals lack the  appropriate knowledge, skills and training to safeguard effectively, or through the lack of robust monitoring and challenge of care plans & CET reviews and  recommendations.
