Legal Literacy in Children's Safeguarding and Court Skills (4 days)

Course Outline:

Working effectively with children, young people and families requires practitioners to navigate complex legal frameworks, make evidence-based decisions and communicate professional judgement clearly and confidently. This four-day programme provides children's social care professionals with the legal knowledge, analytical skills and practical tools needed to support, safeguard and protect children while promoting their welfare and best interests.

During the first two days, delegates will develop their understanding of the legal framework underpinning children's social care practice. The programme explores key legislation, statutory duties, threshold decision-making, human rights considerations, the importance of the child's voice, information sharing and evidence gathering. Participants will examine the interventions, provisions and legal orders available to support children and families, alongside the Public Law Outline and pre-proceedings process.

Delegates will also consider how to assess and analyse evidence effectively, apply professional judgement and make defendable decisions that promote positive outcomes for children. Particular emphasis is placed on identifying and managing risk, evidencing concerns and ensuring that assessments and recommendations are proportionate, child-focused and legally informed.

The third day focuses on professional report and statement writing. Participants will learn how to prepare clear, analytical and court-compliant reports, statements, assessments and care plans that effectively evidence concerns, demonstrate professional reasoning and support judicial decision-making.

On the final day, delegates will develop their understanding of the Family Court process and the role of the social worker as a witness in both private and public law proceedings. Through practical exercises and witness familiarisation, they will build confidence in presenting evidence, responding to challenge and giving evidence effectively within Family Court proceedings.
